So here we go again, Aglardh is up and running, albeit not without changes... So I am trying to explain it away.

What happened?

Well, as it was announced on the old site, the web hosting company has performed a major software upgrade1, after which Aglardh and EldarinWiki stopped functioning properly. As the update of the underlying Drupal portal/blog engine was imminent anyway, I decided to do it now. It's done.

Let's get technical!

There is a downside to all this: the database under the old Aglardh site that contains all the posts, writings, comments etc. cannot be ported to the new engine. The database structure changes between the old2 and the new3 Drupal versions is just too big to escape a significant data loss if I tried to do that...

The good, the bad and the beautiful

So the bad news: the old site is still there, but I am forced to archive it - i.e. it will be accessible via a separate link from the sidebar, you will be able to browse the old posts and comments, but cannot post any new content. You can of course link to the old posts for reference.
The good news: luckily I was able to transfer the user database, so theoretically all users of the old site should be able to log in with their usual name/pass. If not, drop me an email or re-register. I apologize for any inconvenience you may experience...
And finally: with all the upgrades and changes Aglardh will hopefully retain the old functionality4 while being now based on a modern, more robust, standard-compliant5 and SEO-friendly6 site.

So welcome back! Explore the new Aglardh - I hope you'll enjoy your stay.

Yours,

Atwe

Hey, a great slogan and a great new logo! Írima!

admin:

Thanks:) I like experimenting with new typefaces, I really love nice fonts.
The slogan was inspired by an elfling message by David Salo, as some have perhaps recognized...

oreramar:

Any idea why I do not see the slogan in Tengwar although I have those fonts installed?

admin:

Uin ista - sí.
The feature is implemented in pure css, no JavaScript or any other trickery is involved. What operating systema nd browser do you use? Have you tried to view Aglardh in another browser?

oreramar:

I am on XP and use Netscape. Mozilla and Internet Explorer are even worse.
To read Tengwar from Aglardh, I copy the sentence into Word and chose the Tengwar font and then it converts into the Tengwar.
But don't loose your time thinking about it. I just asked in case you had an idea.

Atwe:

I did not know Netscape still exists...

I have tried it under XP and also under Linux with Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Opera, all display the tengwar correctly.

If you use Mozilla or Firefox, try go into its Options menu, find the section that deals with fonts, and look for an option that says "allow websites to use their own fonts" or something similar, and make sure it's selected.

oreramar:

I will have to look into this problem when I have a bit more time. I downloaded Opera and it does not work either.

Aran:

Could we open a new Quettaron Minasurie? I've got something to share..

Atwe:

sure (anybody can open topics)

So the sidebar is now on the right side, eh? :-)

admin:

Allegedly search engines like Google prefer if the main content comes first on the left side, that facilitates indexing of the pages. If that little helps, I can live with a right-hand side sidebar:)

admin:

EldarinWiki is still down and has to be updated - I am hoping that I can avoid the same fate as with Aglardh and can preserve the site as it is, just with an upgraded MediaWiki engine.

Tyrhael:

Hi - I see EldarinWiki is accessible, but can one actually add/edit content now? For the next couple of days (maybe even a week), I'm home alone with little to do, and I felt the sudden urge to try to add words that aren't in the Wiki yet.

Mind you, I'm pretty fickle, so I can't guarantee a long-term commitment, but I might pop in now and again and add content piece-by-piece ... not the 'long haul' like you and oreramar though.

Figured I should ask - is it up and running? I see nothing is happening ...

If not, I'll likely make a list (w/ page references, maybe expanded later) of the words in PE17 not found in the Index. I wonder if something like that is already available? I've been out of the loop since Nov. 2008, so who knows.

- Tyr xD

admin:

Well, miracles happen, it seems:)

Long time no see, welcome back Tyr! Yes, the wiki is online, although as Oreramar says not much work has been done since last summer really. So there's scope for improvement:) The smallest contribution is most welcome. The link here on the sidebar should work - feel free to roam the wiki and ask if you need some information.

Who knows if I see that something is happening I myself might come out of hibernation and start working on it again.

Tyrhael:

I just think the Wiki has a lot of potential, and it would be a shame if it stopped here. :)

Did it lose any content, or is it as it was last summer? Since even many Noldorin entries from Etymologies aren't in there - I'm thinking of starting with adding the words in Etym., then following up with VT45+46 so items can be marked as misreadings with links to the proper spellings.

I have to familiarize myself with the formatting again, and how the roots and homonyms are set up.

Though ideally if I am to add from Etym., I should be adding items from PE18 as well? I'm not quite sure what's in it, as I don't have it.

Tyrhael:

I was starting to look at pages and try to enter items, but several of the special characters (specifically            ) won't show - instead I see boxes with F6-** (like F6-BF, F6-C2, etc.) in them. I already have AelfwinaBocSans installed on my computer, and just set it as my Firefox default, but they're still not showing. Are vowels with breve above macron already available, i.e. the ones I can't see?

I'm going to try installing some more Unicode fonts ...

admin:

Hi Tyr,

is the encoding in your Firefox set to UTF-8? (Under View menu).

I have just checked and I can see the accented characters even in an ancient IE6 so I am unsure what the issue is on your side. Will investigate further with other browsers.

Tyrhael:

Hey Atwe,

It was originally set to 'Western', but I changed it to UTF-8 during my attempts to understand/fix this problem which I underwent before writing my previous post. I'm using Firefox 3.5.6, and just attempted to see the characters in IE8, but those certain characters I listed earlier don't work in IE as well. Odd ...

admin:

I've just checked it with the latest Opera and it shows all the special characters beautifully. Maybe you could check your font options in your firefox, perhaps your locally set fonts override the one the wiki uses.

Tyrhael:

Well, what fonts are Aglardh and EldarinWiki set to use? Maybe I don't have them installed? I already have Firefox set to use UTF-8 encoding and allow pages to use their own fonts, though I tried disallowing that and forcing the pages to use fonts like AelfwinaBocSans which have those characters, but they still won't show.

I've tried getting symbols like A with macron and acute, vowels with macron and breve, etc. from "Insert" in Word using AelfwinaBocSans and then copy-pasting them into Aglardh and the Wiki's text boxes, but that doesn't work either - I get boxes as well though they show up in Word fine, or if I paste them into Google.

Curiously enough, the two that work for me are e with macron and acute, and o with macron and acute, and I can't find those in AelfwinaBocSans' character charts.

Let me show what I mean:
EldarinWiki pic
Word pic

Maybe I need to install or reinstall whatever font EldarinWiki and Aglardh use as defaults?

Tyrhael:

This is no reason to get hung up, so for the time being I'll just ignore when I need to add special characters I can't, and make incorrect entries like ú for U with macron and acute, perhaps, and just make a list of such mistakes that I can ask other people to fix (I imagine 'fixing' such things should not be too demanding).

Does this work? I think I should get into working, rather than getting stuck on not being able to see certain characters in any of my browsers.

I'll be starting with adding the remaining words of Etym. that aren't in the Wiki, then I'll add from VT45+6 if any are missing, and make the cross-references; I imagine I'll have plenty of questions in the future (I already thought of one).

admin:

I agree. We will sort out your encoding problem, but don't let it stop your impetus. And any questions are welcome - but I suggest you open a new topic for them here in Aglardh in the EldarinWiki section of the forum.

Tyrhael:

testing ... 

I installed many new Unicode fonts, and am playing around with page encoding, but it seems I haven't been able to get it to work after all. Has anyone mentioned this problem before?

oreramar:

I have to pinch myself - do I really read here that someone wants to work on the Wiki? I checked three times the date of your message, but no doubt, it's all new. :)

Every piece-by-piece contribution is most welcome. Actually the Wiki works since Spring 2008.

I had a lot of different things to do during 2009 and I have to admit that I let the Wiki on the side. It would definitely encourage me to get back to work seeing someone else contributing from time to time. So, a big thank you.

For the details I let Atwe reply.
