Turin and The Dragon (Lines 22-30)

Submitted by Andrew Higgins on Sat, 2007-06-23 22:19.

Hello All

A heavy work schedule and the arrival of VT 49 has prevented me from working on the Turin translation - but here are the next lines up to Line 30 with some notes. Look forward to comments

Na rynd Bauglir vi emyn carannen
na uduin en-ang in ngathrond dolen
hain tunger i gallon en-dor Hithlumm
Thalion Erithamrod, na cheron arn chyn
destol na dheloth saer vi gur in
na rhuith prestannen
ai i dur en-auth u-danc dad
Turgon, ion Finweg, pae adaer en-aran,
u-dhan i chin Feanor
in tain in miryn angul ah uireb

Notes:

rynd - plural of rond (RON) as in Aglarond
gothrond - pl of gothrod
tungir - from tog, tunc (3rd pl - tunger)
arn - regal (for throned)
hyn - their?
pae adaer en-aran - pae (ten)+ an (intensifying prefix) + daer (greatm large) from NDER = to get the idea
of "ten times a" with genitive?

To Bauglir's halls in the hills builded
to the Hells of Iron and the hidden caverns
they haled the hero of Hitlum's land
Thalion Erithamrod, to their throned lord
whose breast was burst with a bitter hatred
and wroth he was that the wrack of war had not taken
Turgon ten times a king even Finweg's heir nor Feanor's children
makers of the magic and immortal gems

1. line: cernin, not carannen (car- > pp. sg. carnen > pp. pl. cernin)
2. line: I don’t think that udûn becomes uduin in plural, nevertheless I have no idea what will be the correct plural form of it. :-) Otherwise ’Hells of Iron’ is simply Angband. ;-)
2. line: the plural form of gathrod is gethryd, so ’the hidden caverns’ = i ngethryd dholin (pp. sg. dolen > pp. pl. dolin)
3. line: tyngir, not tungir (the connective vowel 'i' triggers umlaut u > y)
3. line: just i gallon Dor Hithlum
4. line: na cheron arn dín (their = *tín)
5. line: dostol, not destol (if you refer to the verb dosta-)
5. line: na dheloth haer (saer > lenited haer)
