Etymology

MA3 and the associated MAG, which yield *ma3-tā to handle: Eld. *mahtā-: Q mahta-, ON matthō-be, N matho stroke, feel, handle; wield in Etym. The semantic gap is not very difficult to bridge: use - wield, → control - power, might. And it ties beautifully with PIE magh- which precisely gives us may, might, Macht.
