(Neo)Quenya Equivalents of the 1000 Most Frequent English Words

Forums

The idea popped up on Vinye Lambengolmor that we could continue this fun project that we started on Google Plus but never finished.

We can discuss ideas here as we are progressing through the list (which is already quite advanced).

Here's the link to the spreadsheet:

Neither of them were neutral

Forums

It's funny how things that should be evident sometimes stay hidden despite glaring in your face - yesterday I was musing about how I would express the adjective neutral in NeoQuenya. This, of course, led me to Etymonline and the aforementioned into-face-glaring, when I realized that L neuter, the basis of the word neutralis, is cognate of English neither, which of course makes all the sense in the world (Hungarian semleges "neutral" also comes from sem "nor, neither".

pair

Forums

What would you use for "pair" as a noun? The dual declension is useful to denote a pair of things, but sometimes one needs a generic term for 'pair, couple'.

My immediate idea is to use atwa or tanta nominally, but maybe someone will have a better idea.

oppose

Forums

Would *anasta- be a viable neologism for "oppose, face in a certain direction, be against something", as a derivation of the root ANAT > anattā > anasta (as anta- is taken)? See also the early Noldorin athra-.

Alternatively, *anahta- from anak  "against"?

Spatial Positional/Relational Adjectives in NeoQuenya

Forums

I would like to gather ideas for neologisms covering spatial positional/relational adjectives, which are rather sparsely attested, and often cause a headache for NQ writers. These are adjectives that specify an objects position with regards to a center point, axis, or plane.

I am thinking of this set, listing the attested words:

medial/middle/central: endea, en(t)ya

internal/interior: mitya

external/exterior: ava, ette

superior/upper:

inferior/nether: EQ úva

anterior/frontal:

First Age in Neo-Quenya

Forums

Hello! Thank you for accepting me in the forum.

Ingolonde Project
I just finished listing all Sindarin names of Beleriand and characters of the First Age, so they can be translated into (Neo)Quenya. I think that having a consensus on these matters can be very useful for different projects. The list is hosted in Tolkien Gateway, as it can be useful to check the links, but maybe it could be better somewhere else?

Slide, glide

Forums

This is a continuation of a discussion we had on G+, searching for NeoQuenya (and Sindarin) words corresponding to "glide, slide" and "sleigh, sled".

As a summary, Sami suggested to adapt/update the early root √LEHE as *√LEKH and have a verb *leh- "slide, glide" on analogy of lah- "kick".

Robert Reynolds suggested that

Rights

Forums

I am musing about possibilities to express rights and related concepts - rights, dues, claim to something, entitlement, just/justice etc. - in NeoQuenya/NeoEldarin. I have not really been able to find any words in this semantic space in the attested vocabulary (there is a deleted Gnomish word for "rights"), so we'd need to resort to a metaphor or neologism.

Drop

Forums

I am musing about what could the transitive version of the verb drop (release from hand to fall to the ground) look like. Lanta- looks purely intransitive. The root KHAT contains among its glosses "loose from hand", but KHAT is our only root (as far as I can tell) that provides the space for verbs throw/hurl, and I think those are quite different from drop.
