maize, a new world grain plant
Máhis is a loan word based on the Taíno word, mahiz, a word that refers to the plant, zea mays, subspecies mays. The Taíno were not the originators of maize, but they were the first New World contact for the Spanish, and so many New World plants are referenced in Spanish (and other European languages) by loan words from Taíno.
