Etymology


This is Early Noldorin lhind, lhinn 'arrow' (PE13:149,163), changed from plind, plinn. Note that initial p- became h- in Early Noldorin, and similarly pl- > lh-
The problem with this word is that in the Etymologies, the stress pattern PÍLIM- implies no syncope of the first vowel (cf. GÓLOB- > golf 'branch', but GOLÓS- > gloss 'snow'). However, it does not imply *pilind either, but rather *pilf. *Pilind can only make sense as a Quenya loan (?).
